(An Operatic Black Box Recording of Classic Disaster)

  After viewing The Elektra Fugues, Kyle Gann and Margot Eberling declared
in THE VILLAGE VOICE, "More a series of theatrical events musically
structured with little regard for stage convention...a quintet of Diamanda
Galases...Words would form into motivic images sliding into unison...a
mesmerizing dynamic of rich material and uncanny artistry..." This work has

The  cast features some of Philadelphia's leading actors: Elizabeth Webster
as ELEKTRA, Heather Preston as CHRYSOTHEMIS/IPHIGENIA, Jean Korey as
CLYTEMNESTRA, Neill Hartley as PEASANT HUSBAND/GILBERT MURRAY  and Tom Teti
as AEGISTHUS.The piece also spotlights Chris DeWan, one of Los Angeles'
hottest  young indie  actors, as ORESTES.  Valdemar Zialcita, late of the
Alley Theatre,  Houston TX, will play DEUS EX MACHINA/VOICEOVER OF
AGAMEMNON.    Elektra Fugues will  take place at Theatre Double, 1619
Walnut Street   in Philadelphia on 29 November 1999 at 8 pm. Doors will
open at 7:30.  A reception will follow the performance. The reading is  for
one night only.  Admission is pay-what-you-can, and the space is wheelchair
accessible.

RUTH MARGRAFF (Playwright/Librettist) is a founding member of HERE's "Opera
Project" in New York and her work has been developed and produced by the
Public Theatre, Lincoln Center, the Kitchen, NYTW, DTW, New Georges, GAle
GAtes Co., La Mama Galleria and Umbria in Spoleto, Brooklyn College,
Columbia University, etc. (NY); John Harms Center for the Arts (NJ) Red
Eye, Walker Art Center (Mpls); Undermain (Dallas); Salvage Vanguard
(Austin); and Bottom's Dream, A.S.K. (Los Angeles) etc.  Her work has been
published in NuMuse Anthology, Epoch, More Monologues For Women By Women,
Salvage Vanguard Press, Patterson Literary Review, the Mac Wellman Journal,
Conjunctions:28 "Music Theater Portfolio", Downtown Brooklyn and  EDGE New
York. Ruth has been the recipient of a Jerome playwriting fellowship, a
McKnight Advancement Grant, an artist residency at the Villa Serbelloni in
Bellagio, Italy, a NYSCA Individual Artist grant, a Rockefeller MAP
commission and a 1999-2000 NEA/TCG Theater Residency grant with HERE in New
York.  She is a national member of New Dramatists and an assistant
professor of playwriting at the University of Texas at Austin.
